Jenbach, Austria | Fredericia, Denmark – April 23, 2026 – INNIO Group, together with the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers, has completed a landmark, industry-first demonstration of backup power for data centers using 100% hydrogen-fueled gas engines at the 3 MW scale. The test was carried out as part of the Hub’s structured, collaborative approach to identifying and validating innovative technologies to enable large-scale deployment in the data center industry. Technical experts from Microsoft, Google, and Data4 witnessed live testing to assess performance against operational data center requirements.

INNIO’s natural gas engines are recognized for their rapid start-up capabilities, strong transient response and stable performance. Now, these performance characteristics have been successfully demonstrated with hydrogen.

During 3 MW-class testing at INNIO’s research facility, the hydrogen-fueled Jenbacher engine met the demanding response profiles required for mission-critical data center operations. This achievement was validated using various AI load profiles and large, rapid load fluctuations to simulate real-world data center conditions. Technical experts from Microsoft, Google, and Data4 witnessed the live testing and assessed performance against real-world data center requirements, confirming that hydrogen engines represent a promising pathway for backup and prime power needs for next-generation, high-demand data centers.

This test forms part of the Hub’s structured, collaborative process to scale innovation. In the Hub, data center industry leaders jointly define requirements for new technologies to be deployed at scale in data centers. Following a global Request for Information (RFI) for low carbon back-up solutions, hydrogen and clean fuels were selected as a pathway to substitute diesel back-up generators. INNIO’s Jenbacher gas engine technology was chosen for MW-scale validation, with the company preparing and successfully executing the test in collaboration with the Hub technical team. The Hub team includes industry partners such as Data4, Google, Microsoft, Schneider Electric, and Vertiv.

With AI-driven load growth accelerating, data center operators are prioritizing supply certainty, rapid deployment, and decarbonization. Industry analysts anticipate that behind-the-meter and hybrid energy systems in new-build data centers will increase from 10–20% in 2025 to 50–60% by 2030, underscoring the need for scalable, low-carbon alternatives to diesel-based backup systems.

Erin Henderson is Director of Data Center Flexibility & Energy Infrastructure at Microsoft, where she leads the advancement of energy technologies that enable grid-integrated, resilient, and sustainable growth of digital infrastructure.

She brings over two decades of leadership experience across the energy sector, with a track record spanning nuclear operations and regulation, largescale infrastructure delivery, and advanced energy systems. Net Zero Start-up Hub kicks off first incubation program in Fredericia

The Net Zero Start-up Hub has officially kicked off its first incubation program, bringing six international and Danish start-ups together in Fredericia to accelerate the development of next-generation solutions for sustainable data centers and digital infrastructure.

The six-month program marks the launch of a dedicated start-up track within the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers. The initiative is designed to connect early-stage innovators with industry partners, energy systems, and real-world test environments, helping promising technologies move from concept to implementation.

The incubation program is based in Fredericia, a location that brings together critical energy infrastructure, digital connectivity, and industrial expertise. This proximity enables start-ups to develop and test solutions close to the systems they are intended to support.

Kick-off focused on supply chains and pathways into data centers

The kick-off program brought start-ups, industry partners, and ecosystem stakeholders together around a shared agenda focused on how innovation enters data centers in practice.

Sessions explored the data center supply chain, the requirements operators place on new technologies, and how start-ups can collaborate with established companies to move from pilots to deployment. Discussions also addressed how early engagement with operators and infrastructure partners can reduce barriers to adoption and speed up scaling.

As part of a dedicated knowledge-sharing session, team members from different google departments joined the program to share perspectives and inside knowledge.

From ambition to implementation

As demand for digital infrastructure continues to grow, the need for solutions that reduce energy use, increase flexibility, and support decarbonization is becoming increasingly urgent.

The Net Zero Start-up Hub was established to address this challenge by creating a structured environment where start-ups can work closely with data center operators, technology providers, and energy system actors. The goal is to ensure that new solutions are developed with a clear understanding of operational requirements and realistic pathways to scale.

Fredericia as host for innovation

The kick-off also included a small press event, where the Mayor of Fredericia welcomed the participating start-ups and partners while highlighting the city’s role as a hub for energy systems and digital infrastructure.

Dr. Melissa Lott brings a powerful combination of engineering rigor, policy insight and global experience across the energy transition space.

As the head of energy technology innovation at Microsoft, Melissa leads efforts to accelerate low-carbon energy technology solutions. In this work, she brings more than two decades of experience in low-carbon electricity systems, aligning corporate procurement with deep decarbonization, and designing systems that ensure reliability and affordability.

Melissa’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the Hub and for a data center industry looking for new models of innovation that can deliver growth and sustainability at scale.

The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers - a global consortium of leading data center stakeholders, including Danfoss, Data4, Google, Microsoft, Vertiv, and Schneider Electric—has entered into a strategic collaboration with Phinergy to validate its clean Aluminum-Air Generator (AAG) in a commercial configuration. The goal is to demonstrate its suitability for integration into large-scale data center infrastructure, paving the way for global commercial deployment.

This initiative is part of the Hub’s broader mission to accelerate the transition of data centers toward net-zero operations. Supported by global hyperscalers such as Google and Microsoft, the project aims to fast-track the deployment of aluminum-air clean energy tailored to the unique needs of Cloud and AI-driven data centers.

Phinergy’s AAG offers a unique combination of distributed, zero-emission, and on-demand electricity generation, making it an ideal candidate for enhancing both grid resilience and backup reliability. The technology generates clean electricity from aluminum—a fully recyclable energy vector—leveraging existing global supply chains without material loss.

As part of the collaboration, Hub members—who represent major potential end-users of the technology—will allocate a validation site and dedicate teams and resources to the project. Their active involvement will ensure that testing and validation are tailored to current and future data center requirements, maximizing product-market fit and deployment readiness.

Fredericia, Denmark / Oslo, Norway, 22 September – The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers, Invest in Norway, and the Norwegian Datacenter Association today announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon economy in the data center sector.

The collaboration brings together world-leading expertise and leverages Norway’s abundant clean hydropower, expanding solar and wind resources, and strong datacenter ecosystem. Together, the partners will pioneer sustainable solutions at scale.

As a first step, the partners aim to launch the development a physical test site in Norway, designed to demonstrate how surplus datacenter heat and low-cost renewable energy can be integrated into a modular system that captures carbon directly from ambient air. This initiative aligns with Europe’s climate goals while showcasing the role of datacenters as active contributors to energy flexibility, carbon removal, and industrial symbiosis.

Net Zero Innovation Hub joins European AI Testing & Experimentation Facility (AI TEF) for Smart and Sustainability Cities and Communities

The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers is proud to announce that it has joined CitCom TEF, one of the European Union’s five new AI Test and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs). The EU has launched a €2.2 billion investment to establish TEFs across Europe. These facilities offer technical support for innovators, especially startups and SMEs, to test their latest AI-based software and hardware at scale in real-world environments (Technology Readiness Levels 6–8). This includes full integration, validation, and demonstration of AI solutions that can improve energy, mobility, connectivity, and other sectors central to Europe’s green and digital transition.

By joining CitCom TEF, the Net Zero Innovation Hub strengthens its position a European Hub for sustainable digital solutions, connecting startups, researchers, and industry players with European funding and hub expertise in the journey toward net zero. The Hub is building a network of European testing sites, with a special focus on data centers and their role in the twin transition.

As a designated TEF, the hub has access to public funding and is positioned to leverage public and private scale investments for commercial-scale implementation.

The Net Zero Innovation Hub welcomes Phinergy as Hub member.

The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers, the leading global consortium of data center stakeholders—including Danfoss, Data4, Google, Microsoft, Vertiv, and Schneider Electric—has selected Aluminium-air backup solution as a key technology to accelerate the transition to data centers net-zero operations.

Phinergy’s innovative solution was chosen from over 70 proposals submitted in response to the Hub’s Request for Information (RFI) aimed at identifying clean and scalable backup energy systems for data centers. As a selected technology provider, Phinergy will be officially inducted as a member of the Hub, joining the industry’s most influential players in shaping sustainable digital infrastructure.

Phinergy and the Hub will now collaborate towards the execution of a funded project for scaling Aluminium-air backup systems to the MW level and deploying them in live environments at hub member data centers.

NZIH Workshop in Amsterdam: Pilot projects to start in 2025

Data Centers as grid assets, heat reuse ready solutions with and without district heating, and clean back-up solutions.The Net Zero innovation hub for data centers hosted a workshop in Amsterdam at Google, where the Hub members presented innovative solutions which will be integrated in pilots in 2025.

During the workshop, hub members were updated on ongoing projects. The ongoing RFI for net-zero data center back-up solutions has delivered multiple clean back–up solutions, which are currently being evaluated. The Heat Reuse team delivered reference designs, ready to be implemented in projects. The Operators aligned the Scope 3 emissions project track, led by Data4.

Testing Phase for Innovative Net Zero Solutions kicks off in 2025
As one of the key takeaways, CEO Alberto Ravagni was able to share that The Hub is now part of the European Testing Experimental Sites (TEFs) network, supported by the European Commission.

TEFs are specialised large-scale reference sites open to all technology providers across Europe to test and experiment at scale state-of-the art AI solutions, including both soft-and hardware products and services.

Alberto expands: “We are building a European network of testing sites to drive innovation and lead the transition to a sustainable future. We invite you to join us in testing innovations ready for demonstration.”

A few of the highlights from the workshop included solutions being presented on major project tracks:

Heat Reuse Solutions: Integrating with district heating systems and alternative heat off-takers.
Reference Designs for developing heat-reuse-ready data centers.
Clean Onsite Power Generation: Delivering clean backup solutions and faster power access for data centers, a project area already receiving strong industry interest, as well described in this Sean James post.
The evaluation phase has begun for the first batch of innovations submitted through the new RFI (Request for Innovation).

Participants included representatives from Google, Danfoss, Schneider Electric, Vertiv, Alfa Laval, BP, Deif, RISE, Mitsubishi, Wilo, PLDCA, WA3RM, Høje Taastrup District Heating, Noord-Holland and Innio Jenbacher.

Thomas Parker from WA3RM shared how WA3RM is bringing waste to life by. WA3RM was recently announced as a partner for heat reuse on a major atNorth data center project in Denmark. When it comes to heat reuse, The Hub works with two major tracks, and Heat-to-x (heat reuse for other purposes than district heating) is a track showing promise as a solution in places where district heating isn’t as widespread.

“ When connecting a data center with a greenhouse, remember that one of these is a high-tech energy facility, ” said Thomas Parker, Wa3rm, in a memorable quote.

Frederik Rugaard from Høje Taastrup District Heating followed up with inspiring examples of successful integration between the Danish district heating company and local data centers.

Piotr Kowalski from Polish Data Center Association shared the experiences the PLDCA has built in data center waste heat recovery. Poland is now the 2nd largest district heating network in Europe and has large potential for utilizing waste heat. “Poland has historically been seen as a coal-oriented country, but we are on a steep path to decarbonization where data center will play an important role,” Piotr explained.

Drew Turner from Danfoss gave an update on the heat reuse project with a focus on reference design for heat reuse. The heat reuse group is now looking for testing sites to test reference design scenarios.

Learning from EV charging to data center Alan Agurto Goya from BP shared thoughts onwhat EV fast charging and data centers have in common. The relevant grid impact and innovative solutions to turn it into a positive impact.

The Hub has launched its track on de-risking investments.

Through the NZIH innovation process, it creates diverse investment opportunities tailored to different investor profiles—from venture capital supporting small companies in validation stages to project and infrastructure investments for scaling up.

By leveraging both private and public funding sources, the Hub aims to drive innovation at scale.

New heat reuse calculator supports business development of heat reuse cases

The Net Zero Innovation Hub has developed an online tool to estimate the value of heat provided by data centers. The tool is intended to support the business development of use cases for data center heat reuse

With nearly 100% of the electricity consumed by IT equipment dissipated as waste heat, waste heat from Europe’s data centres could make a major contribution to meeting Europe's demand for renewable heat, providing as much as 221TWh/ year or 12% of the total demand (according to EUDCA, Euroheat and Power reports).

To engage potential users, local utilities, and communities, it is useful to engage in a dialogue and be able to address a few common questions: "What is the price of heat provided by data centers? Is it competitive within the local heat market?"

To help support the business development of use cases for data center heat reuse, the Net Zero Innovation Hub has developed a basic heat reuse calculator. The tool provides an approximate cost range for the heat supplied by a data center.

Danfoss, Data4, Google, Microsoft, Schneider Electric and Vertiv today launched the first RFI of its kind in Europe, intended to accelerate the deployment of innovative solutions which can substitute diesel back-up generators.

The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers (NZIH) was founded to accelerate the deployment at scale of innovative Net Zero solutions in the AI-era. The goal of the RFI is to verify that innovative solutions are sufficiently mature, scalable and competitive to be widely deployed in data centers.

The goal of the RFI is to find innovative solutions that can scale at GW dimension. Net Zero Innovation Hub board of directors to host a session at the upcoming DCD London conference on 18th September.

The session is taking place on 18th September from 15.00 GMT at the Business Design Center in London.

During the session, attendees will find out about current and upcoming projects, how to get involved, and meet the team and the board behind the Innovation Hub. The session is open to all attendees of the conference.

Net-Zero vs. Carbon Neutral

There is a key distinction between a carbon-neutral goal and a net-zero emissions goal. Carbon neutrality is often achieved by purchasing carbon credits.

The approach has 2 main limitations:

Purchasing credits does not necessarily reduce emission at the source.
The quality of the credits or certificates is difficult to guarantee in practice.

Carbon credits are often linked to carbon reductions versus assumed baselines, leading to measurement, double-counting and additionality issues.

The efforts to achieve carbon neutrality did contribute to the growth of renewables and the funding of several carbon reducing projects. However, aiming at carbon neutrality is not sufficient to achieve climate goals.

Net Zero

The key metric of Net Zero is the amount of CO2 (GHG-equivalent) added- or removed - from the atmosphere. This can be physically measured and verified.

The Net Zero approach is based on 2 steps:

Reduce emission at the source

Net Zero first focus is reducing emissions at the source as much as possible

Remove the remaining emissions

After reducing the emission as far as technically and economically feasible,

the remaining emissions shall be removed from the atmosphere, resulting

in Net Zero addition of GHG to the atmosphere.

Achieving Net Zero requires different technical solutions than the neutrality approach.

Firm, controllable Energy sources,
Short- and long-term Storage to firm intermittent renewables
Carbon removal technologies.

Time-matched, 24/7 Carbon Free Energy generation is key to reduce source emissions.

The list of controllable, carbon free power generation is quite short:

Hydro
Geothermal
Carbon capture and storage (leading to zero emission if applied to fossil fuels, and to carbon removal using sustainable biofuels - BECCS)
Nuclear

Every solution comes with its own set of challenges, and all solutions will be needed at scale.

At the COP 28 in Dubai, 200 countries pledged to triple the renewable power capacity. Renewables’ share increased to a record 14.6% in 2023.

Together with nuclear, they represented over 18% of total primary energy consumption. Tripling that is a great goal.

Today 82% of power generation is fossil fuel based and in 2023, for the first time ever, energy-related emissions exceeded 40 Gigatons CO2e .

Every zero carbon energy source and every carbon removal technology will be needed to reverse this trend. All solutions will be measured with the same metric: GHG added (or removed) from the atmosphere.

All solutions share the same goal: scale-up innovation to move the needle on the CO2 concentration in our atmosphere.

Impact of AI

How is this compatible with the AI-driven explosive growth of energy demand for data centers?

AI can have a net-positive impact on global GHG emissions. This is a central goal not only for the data center industry, but for the global industry. Using AI can reduce GHG emissions by between 2.6 and 5.3 gigatons of CO2e (BCG group). A Gigaton is 1000 Million tons.

This should be compared with data centers emissions 2023 Google emissions (e.g. ca. 14m tons, Microsoft: ca. 17m tons), and with the 40 gigatons emitted globally, from the energy sector alone.

The Net Zero Innovation Hub supports data center growth and accelerates Net Zero goals by de-risking innovation, standardizing solutions, aggregating demand, reducing costs and executing first-of-a-kind projects.

The case for Net Zero, to transform the global energy system in line with the 1.5 °C goal has never been stronger.

August 2023 was the hottest on record by a large margin, this 2024 summer is on track to break that record.

According to the latest report from Energy Institute and KPMG, 2023 has been a record year for the energy sector too. Renewables’ share increased to 14.6%. Together with nuclear, they represented over 18% of total primary energy consumption.

Great news, but good enough?

2023 was unfortunately another record year for the consumption of fossil fuels. Energy-related emissions for the first time ever, exceeded the 40 GtCO2 level.

If renewables growth covers the increase of global energy demand, we will accomplish an energy addition , not an energy transition .

Energy intensity and carbon intensity must be addressed simultaneously, separately and aggressively, if humanity wants to achieve the first energy transition in its history.

At the Net Zero Hub we aim to stay on the transition path and accelerate our progress by scaling net zero solutions which decarbonize energy sources and decouple growth from energy demand.

New CEO to drive the Net Zero Innovation Hub for European Data Centers

The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers announced last month the appointment of Alberto Ravagni as the CEO of the Innovation Hub. The consortium was launched in September 2023 by industry partners Data4, Danfoss, Google, Microsoft, Schneider Electric and Vertiv.

Alberto Ravagni brings over 20 years of experience in the energy industry and is a clean energy architect and industry expert in clean energy, energy storage, and fuel cell technologies. Alberto has been the co-founder and Managing Director of the consultancy firm InfraPrime℠.

Workshop on heat reuse puts focus on data center design, chip temperature and heat market solutions

The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers hosted a workshop on data center heat reuse last week in Frankfurt.

Gathering operators, vendors and research institutions, the day focused on data center design, standardization and impact of HPC chip temperature on data center heat reuse.

The focus was to identify and qualify concrete projects to accelerate the adoption of data center heat reuse for various use cases across Europe.

“The workshop was very constructive in connecting and aligning ecosystems and industry organizations such as EUDCA and Euroheat & Power. Only when we come together and pool our knowledge, can we make things happen much faster and at a much larger scale”, says Alberto Ravagni, CEO of the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers.

“The last few months we have spent time gathering information and reaching out to partners. Now we are ready to move ahead with the first projects within the heat reuse domain. This is a very exciting time for the industry, and we are excited to announce the next steps very soon”, adds Ravagni.

The newly established Innovation Hub is a neutral platform, where the data center industry and the surrounding ecosystems can come together and find solutions to common challenges.

Industry heavyweight joins as the new CEO of the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers

The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers is pleased to announce the appointment of Alberto Ravagni as new CEO of the Innovation Hub. The consortium was launched in September 2023 by industry partners Data4, Danfoss, Google, Microsoft, Schneider Electric and Vertiv.

“I am very pleased that Alberto Ravagni has agreed to become the new CEO of the Innovation Hub. Alberto has vast experience and in-depth knowledge of our industry, as well as the energy sector. He has shown great leadership in his previous positions, is very well-respected and brings a strong track record and international experience from positions earlier in his career,” says Dietmar Baro, Chairman of the Board.

Alberto will be responsible for the daily management of the Innovation Hub, working closely with the founding members and project partners, to decarbonize the data center industry in Europe through innovation and cooperation.

Ravagni has previously contributed to the foundation and served as board member of the Joint Technology Initiative for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells of the European Commission, a public-private partnership which manages a €1 billion innovation program to drive the transition to zero carbon energy systems.

Previously, he was the founder and CEO of SOLIDPower, a market leading fuel cells company, which commercialized fuel cells generators in megawatt scale for residential, SME, and data center clients. Ravagni was a member of the first board.

Alberto Ravagni will start as CEO of the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers on 1 May 2024.

Workshop on data center heat reuse

Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers kicked off first project with a workshop on data center heat reuse.

The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers hosted a workshop on data center heat reuse yesterday at Googles offices in Amsterdam, the first project within the newly established Innovation Hub. The focus was on identifying the challenges surrounding various applications of data center heat reuse in Europe.

The newly established Innovation Hub is a neutral platform, where the data center industry and the surrounding ecosystems, can come together and find solutions to common challenges.

The initial workshop concluded positively with a clear message: European data centers want their excess heat to be reused and become an integrated part of the communities in which they operate in. However, several barriers are hindering these developments, which we need to overcome.

Some of the challenges which were identified were centred around ownership models, regulatory frameworks and pace of technological developments.

“Our aim is to gather a range of partners, including those who have already done some tremendous work within this domain, to see how we can combine our forces and accelerate the development of data center heat reuse in Europe”, says Peder Bank, program lead for the Innovation Hub’s heat reuse project.

This is a complex subject and undoing the “knot” of difficult challenges, cannot be undone, or solved without forging collaborations outside of the data center sector. We need to push this even further and accept that the hardest, but best collaborations, come from being involved in cross-industry and sector innovation systems. This is exactly why the Net Zero Innovation Hub was founded, and I am looking forward to the work ahead of us”, adds Bank.

Participants included representatives from the founder group including Google, Data4, Danfoss, Schneider Electric as well as Meta, Alfa Laval, Wilo, BP, Danfoss, DTU, BorderStep Institute, RISE, Euroheat & Power and DTU.

Data4 joins the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers consortium

European colocation provider Data4 has joined the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers consortium, joining forces with Danfoss, Google, Microsoft, and Schneider Electric.

The Net Zero Innovation Hub was launched in September 2023, to accelerate European data centers towards a net zero future.

At the same time, it will serve as an opportunity to share best practices and guidance from leading researchers. Initially, the focus is on developing solutions that lower or equalize the data centers' carbon emissions and contribute to the stabilization of the electricity grid.

Today, Danfoss, Google, Microsoft and Schneider Electric - together with the Danish Data Center Industry - are launching a new pan-European initiative called Net Zero Innovation Hub For Data Centers, located in Fredericia, Denmark. The goal is to speed up common solutions for the green transition of data centers .

Cloud computing plays a vital role in the digital and green transformation of society - enabling people to benefit from digital tools and businesses to work more efficiently and grow. In the past decade alone, the number of internet users has doubled - and global internet traffic has increased 25-fold, according to the IEA.

As the digital adaptation continues to grow, and to reach the net zero targets, the data center industry is working to reduce the energy footprint in a number of areas, such as energy efficiency, cooling, the supply chain, and improvements of the grid.

With today’s Net Zero Innovation Hub launch, the Danish Data Center Industry, Danfoss, Google, Microsoft and Schneider Electric are bringing together key stakeholders in the European data center sector - including regulators, researchers, operators, utility providers, NGOs, and grid/network services.

The consortium will function as a meeting place where key players can enter into collaborations and develop new innovative solutions that can be quickly implemented for the benefit of the green transition. At the same time, it will serve as an opportunity to share best practices and guidance from leading researchers. Initially, the focus is on developing solutions that lower or equalize the data centers' carbon emissions and contribute to the stabilization of the electricity grid.

The Danish Data Center Industry will act as a secretariat for the initiative, and the CEO of the association, Henrik Hansen, outlines the importance of the cross-sectoral nature of the Hub.

“This initiative reflects the level of commitment and responsibility the data center industry is willing to take to solve the challenges ahead. The roadmap to zero-carbon data centers requires solutions beyond the industry’s capabilities to solve independently. The open-sourced approach with stakeholders, both within and outside of the industry, will significantly accelerate the industry towards net zero, aligning with EU’s ambitions for data centers by 2030”, says Henrik Hansen.

The launch of the new Net Zero Innovation Hub takes place today at 2.30- 6.00 PM CEST in Fredericia.
