The Net Zero Innovation Hub (NZIH) initiates a Request for Information (RFI) for Net Zero Data Center Back-Up Power Solutions

Christine Kjær Jacobsen • November 12, 2024

Danfoss, Data4, Google, Microsoft, Schneider Electric and Vertiv today launched the first RFI of its kind in Europe, intended to accelerate the deployment of innovative solutions which can substitute diesel back-up generators.

The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers (NZIH) was founded to accelerate the deployment at scale of innovative Net Zero solutions in the AI-era. The goal of the RFI is to verify that innovative solutions are sufficiently mature, scalable and competitive to be widely deployed in data centers.

Alberto Ravagni, CEO at Net Zero Innovation Hub, explains: “The NZIH is proud to launch its first Request for Innovation on the topic Net Zero Back-Up solutions for data centers. The goal of the RFI is to find innovative solutions that can scale at GW dimension. The collaborative approach used to prepare the RFI requirements was crucial to provide an important market signal which will accelerate the scale-up back-up solution with zero emissions.”

About the RFI: Net Zero Data Center Back-Up Power Solutions

The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers (NZIH) develops and executes collaborative projects which de-risk innovations and enable their deployment at GW scale following a 3-step approach:

  1. Align, aggregate and standardize requirements of the data center industry
  2. Identify innovative solutions which are scalable and supported by a solid innovation supply chain, which can deliver innovation to GW scale
  3. Execute FoaK validation pilot projects at scale, leveraging public and private investments

Advanced clean technologies face challenges, in part because of the novelty and risk of early projects. By aggregating and confirming industry demand, developing new commercial structures with the support of the world’s largest buyers, this approach aims to reduce the risks for innovators, developers, and energy companies, thus resolving the catch-22 situation between commercial projects and investments, ensuring the investments necessary to bring these solutions online at scale.

The RFI invites a wide variety of innovative companies to submit their innovations, including those in earlier stages of commercialization. The innovative aspect of the solutions can be represented by the technology, the business model, other aspects, or combinations thereof.

Partner Quotes

Shen Jackson, Director of Engineering at Google "It is our common responsibility to develop new business models and fuel future innovations in order to accelerate the data center industry towards a net zero future. This RFI is particularly designed to accelerate the deployment of advanced clean technologies by reducing the risk for early commercial projects. And ultimately, bring clean technologies online faster, maximizing their positive impact."

Todd Noe, Director of Energy Innovation at Microsoft: "Our participation in the NetZero Innovation Hub's RFI for hydrogen backup generation reflects Microsoft's dedication to sustainability and innovation. By working together with industry leaders, we aim to send a strong market signal that the demand for carbon-free backup solutions is not only present but also imperative."

Linda Lescuyer, Innovation Leader at Data4: "While European electronic networks are resilient, we must implement backup solutions to ensure 99.999% reliability for our infrastructure and guarantee operational continuity for critical applications. These generators, although rarely or never used, have an impact on the environment—both in their production and operation. This RFI presents an opportunity to identify and support innovative solutions that reduce environmental impact across the lifecycle."

Net Zero Innovation Hub board of directors to host a session at the upcoming DCD London conference on 18th September. The session is taking place on 18th September from 15.00 GMT at the Business Design Center in London. During the session, attendees will find out about current and upcoming projects, how to get involved, and meet the team and the board behind the Innovation Hub. The session is open to all attendees of the conference. The Net Zero Innovation Hub is a pan-European initiative led by Danfoss, Data4, Microsoft, Google, Schneider Electric and Vertiv. The scale of innovation projects struggles to keep up with the scale, speed and complexity of data center projects. To master the challenges of the twin transition, towards Net Zero and AI, the data center industry needs new innovation models. This can be achieved through cooperation across the data center industry, with companies driving innovation, start-ups, academia, R&D institutions, industry associations, advocacy entities, public and private investors. The Hub is selecting innovations in the early commercialization phase, to evaluate and execute projects, solutions, and business models based on their “Net Zero Impact” and acceleration capability towards Net Zero. The focus of the first set of projects are within the area of Carbon-Free Energy and Heat Reuse, which we are excited to announce together with our partners. “We are looking forward to the session at DCD, meeting industry partners and developing the partnerships needed to bring innovation projects from First-of-a-Kind (FoaK) to beyond the critical mass”, says Alberto Ravagni, CEO of the Net Zero Innovation Hub. “Net Zero means for us having a zero or positive impact on planet, people and profit, starting with the environmental impact measured by the GHG emissions, and extending to the holistic LCA impact categories”, adds Ravagni. About the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers The Net Zero Innovation Hub is a pan-European initiative which seeks to address key sectoral challenges through concrete innovation projects and establishing stronger links between operators, suppliers, and governments.
