Strategic Partnership Announcement: Net Zero Innovation Hub, Invest in Norway and Norwegian Datacenter Association.
Fredericia, Denmark / Oslo, Norway, 22 September – The Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers, Invest in Norway, and the Norwegian Datacenter Association today announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon economy in the data center sector.
The collaboration brings together world-leading expertise and leverages Norway’s abundant clean hydropower, expanding solar and wind resources, and strong datacenter ecosystem. Together, the partners will pioneer sustainable solutions at scale.
As a first step, the partners aim to launch the development a physical test site in Norway, designed to demonstrate how surplus datacenter heat and low-cost renewable energy can be integrated into a modular system that captures carbon directly from ambient air. This initiative aligns with Europe’s climate goals while showcasing the role of datacenters as active contributors to energy flexibility, carbon removal, and industrial symbiosis.
“By combining Norway’s strengths in sustainable energy with cutting-edge carbon removal technologies, we aim to create a living laboratory for climate-positive datacenters that can be scaled and replicated across Europe,” said Alberto Ravagni, CEO of the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers.
The Net Zero Innovation Hub leverages a pan-European network – including Microsoft, Google, Data4, Schneider Electric, Danfoss, and Vertiv – ensuring that the Norwegian test site will be embedded within a broader innovation ecosystem.
In the coming months, the partners will outline opportunities for research institutions, technology providers, and policymakers to engage in the project through workshops and joint activities.
“We believe this partnership marks an important step in shaping the future of the data center industry – not just as a consumer of energy, but as a key enabler of net-zero innovation,” added Reynir Johannesson, Managing Director of the Norwegian Datacenter Association.
“Norway is uniquely positioned to lead the way in sustainable digital infrastructure. With our renewable energy resources and strong technology environment, we are proud to support this partnership and look forward to fostering further innovation in Norway,” said Benedicte Fasmer Waaler, Special Advisor at Invest in Norway.
